GENERAL FAQ

  • Cheating. The noble art.

    CREATURES 1:

Q: How do I play Creatures without the cd?

A: This is quite simple. Click on the Start button on your desktop (the one that's down on the left) and find the shortcut to Creatures in your Start menu. Add the word "-embedding" (without the quotes). For instance, if the shortcut says "C:\Program\Creatures\Creatures.exe", change it to "C:\Program\Creatures\Creatures.exe" -embedding. The path could be different, don't change the path, just add -embedding.

Q: How do I play the Cheese/Doctor/Darwin cheat?

A: You have to alter your registry. This can be dangerous and might screw up your computer badly if you don't know what you're doing.

    1. First, find a file on your computer called Regedit.
    2. Now, VERY IMPORTANT, make a copy of that file and rename it to regedit_copy. This way, if you do something wrong you can just replace the screwed up file with the backup. Don't skip this step.
    3. Open the Regedit file (a double-click should work).
    4. Click yourself ahead to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Millenium Interactive\Creatures\1.0\
    5. Find the field "Privileges". Now change it from "User" to "Darwin", "Cheese", "Doctor" or "Skirty".
    6. Run the game and see what happens. You'll see a selection of new menus, and you can scroll freely. You can also hold down your SHIFT key and left-click on any object or creature to move it. Remember: When you're in cheat mode the game doesn't save automatically, so you have to save the world before you close it.

    CREATURES 2:

Q: How do I play Creatures 2 without the cd?

A: Again, you have to alter your registry.

    1. First, find a file on your computer called Regedit.
    2. Now, VERY IMPORTANT, make a copy of that file and rename it to regedit_copy. This way, if you do something wrong you can just replace the screwed up file with the backup. Don't skip this step.
    3. Open the Regedit file.
    4. Click yourself ahead to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cyberlife Technology\
    Creatures 2\1.0\
    5.
In the Edit menu, select New and String Value (this can vary depending on what language youŽre using).
    8. Name the new value "No CD-ROM needed" without the quotes ("..").

Q: How do I play the Coconut Grove/Blueberry cheat?

A: Time to edit the registry again.

    1. First, find a file on your computer called Regedit.
    2. Now, VERY IMPORTANT, make a copy of that file and rename it to regedit_copy. This way, if you do something wrong you can just replace the screwed up file with the backup. Don't skip this step.
    3. Open the Regedit file.
    4. Click yourself ahead to HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Cyberlife Technology\Creatures 2\1.0\Privileges.
    5.
In the Edit menu, select Modify.
    8. Replace "User" with "The Coconut Grove" or "Blueberry4$" without the quotes ("..").
    9. Start your game. The Coconut Grove cheat removes everything in the world, so use this only when you want to make a new world. The Blueberry cheat adds some new features like "Activate Game States" which activates all the power-ups. You can also move things like in the C1 cheat, by holding down the CTRL and SHIFT keys on your keyboard and left-clicking on the object you want to move.

Note: When you have the cheats activated, the game doesn't save automatically. So remember to save the world before you close it.

To get the world back to normal, just replace the value you just entered with "User" again.

Q: All my eggs are gone! How do I get them back?

A: The problem with using the game option to restore the hatchery, is that you only get four new eggs. With this trick youŽll get all six. Time to edit the registry again.

    1. First, find a file on your computer called Regedit.
    2. Now, VERY IMPORTANT, make a copy of that file and rename it to regedit_copy. This way, if you do something wrong you can just replace the screwed up file with the backup. Don't skip this step.
    3. Open the Regedit file.
    4. Click yourself ahead to HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Cyberlife Technology\Creatures 2\Hatchery\1.0.
    5. Click on any key ending in .egg
    6. Click on Eggstra.
    7. Open the Edit menu and select modify.
    8. Replace "Omelette" with "CoolandGroovy", without the quotes ("..").

YouŽll have to change the value of each .egg file, in order to get it back into the Hatchery. The names of the .egg files stand for the following:

hm54.egg - Male bald norn ("Desert")
hf54.egg - Female bald norn ("Desert")
    im54.egg - Male green norn ("Emerald/Gem")
    if54.egg - Female green norn ("Emerald/Gem")
    jm54.egg - Male white-haired norn ("Pixie")
    jf54.egg - Female white-haired norn ("Pixie")

Q: I want more norns in my world! How?

    A: More registry editing.

    5. Click on MaxNorns.
    6. In the edit menu, select Modify.
    7. Replace the value with the number of norns you want.

  • From the Internet. Downloading and Unzipping norns and cobs.

Q: I don't know how to use Winzip and this downloading and unzipping business seems difficult.

A: If you're new to the internet and downloading files it can be tricky getting the norns and cobs to work. You download them to your computer, then what? Thankfully, there is help. Check out this tutorial from Creature Labs that teaches you everything you need to know:

The Gettin' (Win) Zippy with it FAQ

Note: This is Wayback's mirror of the old Creature Labs site, so the .zip links wont work. You can still follow the tutorial though.

(Tip: Scroll down to the bottom and click on next if you're not that interested in what Winzip is about and want to get right to the tutorial.)

  • The Big Picture. Getting big screengrabs from your game.

Q: How do I take a big picture from my game? I've tried using the photo thing in the game but the pictures are so small.

A: This is one of the most common questions I get. It's a good idea to know this trick if you're thinking of starting your own creatures site. Here's how you do it:
    1. When you have the motif that you want to take a pic of (for instance, two norns kissing), pause the game and press the "Print Scrn" button on your keyboard. It's usually on the right and top of the keyboard.

    2. This will store an image of your desktop in your computer's memory. Now, open up your favorite paint program. There's one simply called Paint which comes with Windows, but if you want a better one there's Paint Shop Pro which you can download for free from www.jasc.com.
    3. Make a new blank image and choose Edit/Paste to paste the image in your memory into the new image. There! Now you have your big screengrab. Now you can edit it in any way you want. Remember to save it as a .gif or .jpg image if you want to put it on a web page.

  • Finding the cob.

Q: I used to have this really nice cob that I downloaded from a site somewhere. Now my computer crashed and I can't find it. Where do I look?

A: There are so many cob sites out there. Because of this some smart people have started cob directories, and these are the first places you should go to look for a lost cob or agent:

The Cobfinder - A site where you can find links to Creatures 1 cobs by different creators.
Google - The world's favorite search engine. Tip: Look for "creatures cobs", "creatures-2 cobs" or "docking-station agents".

CREATION FAQ

  • Being creative. How to make your own stuff for creatures.

    Q
: I want to make my own cobs and agents. Teach me how!

A: Making cobs and agents isn't that difficult but you have to be prepared for some late night studying and banging your head on the keyboard. Here are some good resources to get you started:

The CDN - Or the Creatures Developer Network. Best place to start, especially for Docking Station/Creatures 3 agent engineering. You can also get some great tools and ask questions in the discussion area.

Helen's Bibble Directory - Helen has written some greatly acclaimed tutorials for beginner cobblers / agent engineers. Mostly for C2.

The Creatures Developer Resource - Some good utilities here.

HAHAHA - Something really fun is to run my old URL through the Wayback machine- do it to see some vintage Jungle (http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/3905/ *priceless* *nostalgic tear*)

Q: I want to make new norn breeds! Where do I start?

A: Making new norn breeds is all but the most time consuming thing you can do for creatures, only topped by creating new worlds. You need to be good on the artistic side, as well as play the crazy scientist when tinkering with new genes. Here are some links to check out:

The Creatures Developer Resource - Lots of info and very useful tools here.

The CDN - Again, the place to go for anything developer related.

    Q: How do I make new worlds/metarooms?

A: Check out the best place for information: The CDN

WEB PAGE FAQ

  • Site Creation. Want to reach out on the webby wide world?

Q: How do I make my own creatures site?

A: First of all you need to learn HTML, or get a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. Then you need to find a good free host where you can put your site. Try looking at Google and search for "free-web-host" and you'll get a long list of places where you can put your site for free. Here are some other good links to get you started.

    HTML:

W3 Schools - Great place for the budding web designer.
Webmonkey - A very good resource.

    Hosts:

Free Web Hosts - A list of free web hosts where you can put your web site.

There's heaps more out there. Look at Google or any other search engine. Oh and a tip: Make sure you test your website properly on different computers before you go live. Saves you some of the trouble I had to go through.. ;)

Q: I want to make it so people can download a norn by clicking on its picture. How do I put links on my website?

A: Check the answer above. If you already know some html, here's the code to link to a zip file with your norn or cob:

    <a href="norn.zip">Download my norn!</a>

Very simple. Just remember to replace the red code with your own. If you want to put up an image that people can click on to download your norn you write the following:

    <a href="norn.zip"><img src="nornimage.gif" border="0"></a>

Again, replace the red code with your own code.

Q: I want to put your cobs on my website. What do I need to do?

A: Note: You can only post my Creatures 1 cobs on your website. Email me to tell me that you're putting my cobs on your site. You need my permission first, since I have to check that your site is appropriate. Next, you have to put a link next to each cob saying: "This cob was made by Freya at the Creatures Jungle". And make the Creatures Jungle part a link to my website. This is very important because otherwise people will think YOU made the cob which is dumb not to mention illegal. But first of all, email me to get permission!
